Introduction
Beloved brother/sister, welcome to another week ordained and blessed by God just for you and for us all. Still in this Sunday, we continue our reflection on the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to Mark. Last week reading terminated at 6th verse, where Jesus left his hometown, Nazareth because of their unbelief and negligence. As Jesus rightly pointed out that “Prophets are not without honour, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house” (Mark 6:4). Because they know his biological background, they rejected him and refused to listen to him, an attitude that deprived them of God’s blessings. Therefore, Jesus had no option than to take the message and the healing to those who need them.
He sent them out in pairs
“Jesus called the Twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits” (Mark 6:7). Mark underlines that Jesus sent his disciples out two by two. This is to ensure there would be two witnesses in accordance with the stipulations of Deuteronomy 17:6. It will also be relevant for the testimony as indicated in Mark 6:11. According to Deuteronomy 17:6,.…
Mission and commitment
When Jesus sent the Twelve disciples on mission and instructed them “to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts. But to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics” (Mark 6:8–9), he wanted them to be fully committed to the proclamation of the Gospel. Such instruction also implies the Gospel does not admit distractions. In this sense, to be committed means to give entirely to a specific activity or cause. The Twelve began their mission with simplicity and were entrusted with authority and power. The truly strong soul is not in need of.…..
Conclusion
Beloved reader, just as Jesus asked the disciples to shake the dust off their feet as a testimony against those who rejected the word of god, you should have nothing in common with anyone who rejects the word of God and refuses to live according to the will of God. Anyone who hears the Gospel is responsible for what he/she does with it. Remember, the important thing is not just listening to the Gospel message, but keeping to it. That is, putting it into practice (cf. Jas 1:22). Everybody is listening to it. And almost everybody is preaching it though they are not qualified.
