Introduction
One outstanding fact from the Scripture is that it reveals to us that people have always been afflicted with series of problems and difficulties. As the author of Qoheleth/Ecclesiastes rightly observes, there is nothing what has happened before will happen again, what has been done before will be done again, there is nothing new in the world (Qoh 1:9). Wherever Jesus went, he was approached by various people who had one problem or the other. In this Sunday Gospel, we find.….…..
The synagogue official’s request
“One of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet. and begged him repeatedly, my little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live” (Mark 5:22–23). It is not difficult to imagine the desperation and frustration of this man whose daughter was at the point of death.…..
Fear not, only believe!
“While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house and said your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?” (Mark 5:35). Emissaries from the ruler’s house must have aggravated his sorrow, and at the same time, manifested their lack of faith and ignorance about Jesus. Seeing that the daughter was already dead according to them, they thought it was useless troubling Jesus.….
Conclusion
Beloved reader, the two topics of our reflection has a lot to teach us. The case of the synagogue’s daughter and the woman suffering from haemorrhage are all contemporary issues. The ruler saw the good in Jesus and approached him. Although he was not so enthusiast about Jesus, yet, he knew and recognized that Jesus was the solution to his problem. There are people who cannot see the good in others. There are even people who condemn others based on hearsay. Such attitude is bad and must be avoided. Some wanted the ruler to give up since according to them, his daughter was already dead. But he refused to give up knowing the solution to his problem is not found in them, but in Jesus. This is strong faith. In fact, Jesus proved him right when he concluded that the child was not dead, but only sleeping.
